Globe Telecom launches converged fixed line, mobile service

12 May 2009

Globe Telecom of the Philippines has announced the launch of a converged mobile and fixed line service using one subscriber identification module (SIM) number. TMCnet writes that the service, dubbed ‘DUO’, allows landline calls and unlimited DUO-to-DUO mobile calls at any time of the day. The operator launched DUO at the end of last month in partnership with UK messaging development company Acision. The British firm is supplying its real-time, location-based charging solutions, Acision Flexible Charger and Acision Location Gateway to support the launch. The two services are designed to improve network traffic, primarily voice, by offering free calls within a set city zone. DUO enables Globe to offer its post-paid mobile and fixed line subscribers free voice calls when the calls originate within a pre-defined geographical zone. Globe hopes to attract new users with the service but is mindful that in a difficult economic climate, it could gain new users from its existing user base of 25.7 million mobile and 400,000 fixed line subscribers – as at end-March 2009.
