Indonesian wireless operator Bakrie Telecom, which markets budget telecom services under the brand name Esia, aims to increase its subscriber base by 43.8% this year to 10.5 million, up from 7.3 million at the end of 2008. The Jakarta Post quotes Bakrie Telecom finance director Jastiro Abi as saying that the target was in line with the company’s efforts to expand its coverage and networks. ‘We plan to enter six new cities in every quarter,’ he said, with the paper noting that Bakrie’s user base jumped to eight million in the first quarter of this year, up from 4.5 million at the same time a year ago. The company plans to spend USD200 million for network expansion in 2009, part of the USD600 million allocated for capital expenditure until 2010.
