Numericable considering move for mobile frequencies

8 May 2009

French cableco Numericable is reportedly mulling options to bid for mobile frequency spectrum when the country holds an auction in the next few months. Dow Jones Newswires quotes an official of the privately-owned operator as saying ‘Numericable is thinking about different possibilities to enter the French mobile market and a tie-up with Virgin Mobile is one of the possibilities that is being studied.’ It is understood that although the company’s main priority is the roll out of its fibre-optic network, Numericable and Virgin Mobile France could consider a joint bid for the frequencies on offer, with La Tribune newspaper going so far as to say the pair are already in talks with Chinese equipment manufacturer ZTE Corp about a possible loan to finance the deployment.
