8 May 2009

US-based mobile operator Leap Wireless has announced that it added 492,000 customers in the first quarter of 2009, giving the cellco a total of 4.34 million subscribers at 31 March. The company saw a 25.3% year-on-year rise in revenues, up to USD587 million, but reported a net loss of USD47.4 million for the quarter due to the increased expenses relating to the launch of its ‘Cricket’ service in Philadelphia and Chicago and the upcoming launches in Baltimore and Washington D.C. President of Leap, Doug Hutcheson, said, ‘Our results demonstrate the strength of our business and confirm that our strategy continues to deliver results, even in the face of a challenging economic and competitive environment. In addition, the company successfully launched its Cricket service to nearly 17 million customers in Chicago and Philadelphia late in the first quarter, our largest markets to date. Our newly launched markets are performing as expected, and we look forward to completing the remainder of our 2009 market launches by the middle of the year.’
