DoT challenges RCOM over GSM launch without security clearance

8 May 2009

The Hindu Business Line is reporting that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has called on mobile operator Reliance Communications (RCOM) to clarify why it started GSM-based operations in the Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) circle without clearance from the country’s security agencies. The DoT has also ordered that the cellco demonstrate its new infrastructure can be monitored by the Intelligence Bureau. RCOM contends, however, that it has complied with security norms, with a spokesperson for the operator noting: ‘We are also offering CDMA-based services in J&K, therefore, our network has been designed keeping in mind the requirement of the security agencies. According to the licence, there is no need for us to get separate clearance from the security agencies for our GSM network.’
