Zon profit falls in first quarter

Portuguese broadband operator Zon Multimedia has reported a 6.7% year-on-year drop in net profit for the three months ending 31 March 2009, down to EUR19.5 million (USD25.9 million). Revenues grew 7.1% to EUR201.5 million in the same period, compared to EUR188.1 million in 1Q 2008. EBITDA climbed 9.1% to EUR64.3 million. These gains were offset by rising capital expenditure, up to EUR44.8 million from EUR24.3 million a year earlier. The company added 27,000 net new customers in the quarter, with a total of 546,100 subscribers to its broadband services at the end of March 2009.
