PLDT postpones launch of Japanese MVNO service

7 May 2009

According to a report in Filipino newspaper BusinessMirror, PLDT Global Corp (PGC), the international sales and marketing unit of Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT), has postponed the launch of a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service in Japan, but says it is still looking to introduce a virtual operator model in Macau, Taiwan and two countries in Europe this year. PLDT president Napoleon Nazareno is quoted by the paper as saying: ‘We were supposed to have a major meeting this month with them but the discussion won’t push through anymore so the launch, which was supposed to take place this year, would be postponed as well.’ It is understood the delay is the result of what Nazareno terms ‘different situations’ in the country. ‘Based on current regulation they have in relation to MVNO, there are some limitations in Japan. The discussion may likely be moved in the third quarter,’ he added.
