TIM Brasil net losses widen in 1Q09

Brazilian mobile phone operator TIM Participacoes (TIM Brasil) reported a first-quarter net loss of BRL144 million (USD67 million), compared with a net loss of BRL125.5 million in the corresponding period of 2008. The telco, a unit of Telecom Italia, said earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA), climbed from BRL532.7 million in 1Q08 to BRL609.4 million a year later. In February this year TIM Brasil took the decision to clean up its mobile subscriber base, removing some users who had defaulted on their bills. As a result of the elimination, TIM Brasil counted 36.1 million active customers at the end of March 2009, down from 36.4 million three months earlier, but 11% higher than the figure reported in 1Q08.
