NT reports strong subscriber growth

1 May 2009

State-owned fixed line and mobile operator Nepal Doorsanchar Company Limited (Nepal Telecom) said strong subscriber growth in the last eight months has helped push its fixed and mobile penetration rate to 13.28% from 10.12% last year, in turn lifting overall telecoms penetration in the country to 20.45% by end-March. Local newspaper Republica reports the operator’s performance has been bolstered by its success in connecting 705,469 GSM mobile lines since mid-2008, for a total of 2.42 million subscribers. The telco plans to distribute an additional two million GSM phone lines and 462,000 CDMA lines in the current fiscal year. ‘In the next two years people can see more people using mobile phone service even in the rural areas,’ said NT director Amar Nath Singh, adding ‘We are also actively pursuing the task of installing VSATs to operate mobile phone services in remote places.’ NT says it has also expanded its services in 171 village development committees (VDCs) across the country, and now covers a total of 3,264.
