MTN wants to enter Zimbabwe

30 Apr 2009

Business Day reports that South African mobile operator MTN Group is eager to enter Zimbabwe’s cellular market, after the firm declared its interest during an exhibit at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in Bulawayo this week. MTN spokeswoman Nozipho January-Bardill said plans were still preliminary, but operating in Zimbabwe was definitely high on the agenda. The news follows the Zimbabwean government’s recent statement that it has received international interest in a planned privatisation of the country’s second largest cellco NetOne, whilst Orascom Telecom has previously attempted to offload its 60% stake in Zimbabwe’s smallest GSM operator Telecel, although the Egyptian group recently put the struggling unit under its Telecel Globe subsidiary, which it set up to expand operations in developing African and Asian markets. The country’s leading mobile provider is Econet Wireless Zimbabwe with around 950,000 subscribers, giving it an approximate 61% share of the market at end-2008.
