Mexican telecoms regulator, the Comision Federal de Telecomunicaciones (Cofetel), has called on the Secretario de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) to punish incumbent Telmex for failures relating to the consolidation of local service areas. In a press release Cofetel said it had conducted an inspection of ten service areas scheduled for consolidation, a process that was due to begin on 4 April, and found that Telmex had not taken the necessary actions to implement the process. A total of 70 local service areas are due to be consolidated in a move that Cofetel contends will make local telephony more affordable. The regulator has submitted a document to the SCT, demanding that sanctions are imposed on Telmex for noncompliance with the established dates. No date for a decision on the matter has been revealed.
