An executive for Telkomsel, Indonesia’s largest cellco by subscribers, has revealed that the company added nearly six million wireless users and 400,000 fixed-wireless users in the first quarter of 2009. At 31 March Telkomsel’s total cellular subscriber base stood at 71.3 million, while its wireless in the local loop (WiLL) customers numbered 10.4 million.
Meanwhile, rival cellco Excelcomindo (XL) has reported that its number of wireless subscribers fell by one million during the same period, from 26 million to 25 million, after the company increased the price of its SIM cards. ‘We increased the price of SIM cards to reduce the number of people who buy XL cards for one-time use and then throw them away,’ said president director Hasnul Suhaimi. The company claims it remains on course, however, to reach its target of 30 million customers by the end of 2009, stating that demand usually picks up during the second and third quarters of the year.
