The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Stephen Conroy, has announced a consultation regarding the future of mobile voice and broadband licences, in which the re-issue of spectrum is mooted. The discussion paper covers a range of issues, and has called for comments on the re-issue of licences in the 800MHz, 1800MHz, 2.1GHz, 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands; while key licences in these frequencies are not due for renewal until 2013, the government is aiming to prepare any necessary legislation well in advance. Commenting on the consultation Mr Conroy noted, ‘There are complex issues that will take some time to assess but work has already begun and I expect that the Government will be making decisions over the next twelve months on this important matter.
