Reuters reports that state-run Angola Telecom has budgeted USD2.4 billion by 2013 to expand and upgrade its domestic fixed line network. CEO Joao Manuel told reporters yeseterday that the first phase of the planned project will involve deploying a 7,000km fibre-optic backbone and installing 500,000 fixed local access connections, at a cost of USD1.2 billion, with a second phase of roughly the same value to further develop the network, taking it up to 2013. Manuel added that Angola Telecom was interested in extending links with Portugal Telecom, with which it jointly manages a small Angolan data transmission operator called Multitel.
