Australian cellco Hutchison 3G Australia (H3G) is now offering roaming on incumbent Telstra Mobile’s NextG network, itWire reports. The two operators announced an agreement in August 2008 that would allow H3G customers to roam on the NextG network in areas where the smaller cellco has no network presence of its own. H3G has also said it plans to expand its own coverage, particularly targeting areas that generate high levels of roaming traffic. With the roaming agreement coming into force H3G now claims that it can offer 3G coverage to 96% of the population. One minor problem that H3G customers face however is that they will need handsets capable of working on both the 850MHz frequency used by Telstra’s NextG network and the 2100MHz band, which H3G’s network operates on.
