The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has dismissed Pakcom’s (InstaPhone’s) appeal regarding outstanding fees for its concession renewal. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, mobile operator Pakcom renewed its licence in April 2005. However it had its concession revoked in January 2008 after failing to make payment for the renewal, despite several deadline extensions by the regulator. The recent ruling has confirmed that the PTA can legally terminate the licence, but has granted a final extension for payment to be made; Pakcom has until 6 May 2009 to pay the outstanding amount or lose its licence.
In addition, the regulator reports that the IHC also dismissed a petition by Pakcom against the government’s Mobile Cellular Policy of 2004, under which new mobile operator licences were awarded.
