Zain Nigeria to migrate to all-IP network

14 Apr 2009

Kuwait-owned Zain Group has selected US network solutions provider Tekelec to enable its Nigerian subsidiary to migrate to an all-IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) network. Tekelec’s EAGLE5 platform supports SIGTRAN (SS7 signaling over IP), a stepping stone for cost-effectively migrating to an all-IP network. John Earley, technical director of Zain Nigeria, said: ‘SIGTRAN enables service providers on PSTNs to use an underlying IP transport vehicle, thereby allowing them to offer their subscribers multimedia services through their existing network. Zain Nigeria completed the EAGLE 5 deployment in Q4 2008, the project has been managed by Tekelec in an exceptionally professional and consistent manner even when faced with integration into a challenging environment such as Nigeria. We are looking forward to a seamless integration into our existing core and anticipate substantial improvements in network signaling performance.’

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Zain Nigeria was the country’s second largest cellco by subscribers at the end of 2008 to MTN Nigeria, with a total wireless customer base of 17.2 million, representing 28.15% market share.
