Vinaphone contracts Alcatel-Lucent for EDGE upgrade

14 Apr 2009

Vietnamese state-owned cellco Vinaphone has selected French vendor Alcatel-Lucent to upgrade its GSM network with EDGE technology in 16 provinces in the north of the country. The rollout is currently underway and the network is scheduled to begin providing commercial services by the end of April 2009. Under the terms of the contract the vendor will design, deploy and maintain its multi-standard GSM/EDGE radio access solution, including its latest Base Station Controller platform and TWIN transceivers. The solution will give Vinaphone the flexibility to introduce new technologies in the future, including EDGE+, W-CDMA, HSPA, HSPA+ and LTE. Olivia Qiu, president of Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, said: ‘With our strong local presence, project management skills and our state-of-the-art wireless technology, we are confident that we will be able to ensure that Vinaphone will be able to reach its goal of providing its customers some of the most advanced mobile services available in Vietnam.’
