9 Apr 2009

Movistar Venezuela, a unit of Spain’s Telefonica, has expanded its commercial 3.5G HSDPA mobile network to the country’s sixth largest city by population, Maracay, in the central region of Aragua. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Movistar launched Venezuela’s first commercial 3G/3.5G W-CDMA/HSDPA services in December 2008 in Greater Caracas, before expanding coverage to cities in central and western areas, including Valencia, Barquisimeto and Maracaibo, and the eastern city of Guayana last month. Rival Digitel also launched a HSDPA network in March, whilst state-owned Movilnet is expected to do the same by the end of the year.
