The world’s largest cellco by subscribers, China Mobile, has revealed plans to spend RMB70 billion (USD10.2 billion) on deploying and upgrading its network in more remote parts of the country. Li Zhengmao, vice president of the company, said the investment will be spread over the next three years and follows spending of RMB19.5 billion on rural networks during the last five years. ‘Last year, about 60% of our new mobile phone users were from the rural areas, which is very encouraging. More than half of our [total] users are from the countryside now,’ Li said. China Mobile finished 2008 with more than 470 million subscribers.
