Vietnam Posts and Telecommunication Group (VNPT) plans to invest USD1 billion to upgrade its broadband networks and expand its international internet bandwidth in 2009, Antara News reports. Under the incumbent’s upgrade plan, its Vietnam Data Communications (VDC) division will make available two additional STM-16 optical links at 2.5Gbps to the US, doubling its international internet bandwidth over 2008. The upgrade will benefit the country’s roughly 2.1 million ADSL subscribers at the end of 2008, of which, 1.3 million were signed up with VNPT and the remainder with Viettel, FPT and Netnam. According to TeleGeography’s GloblComms database, in February 2008 VNPT announced it was invest ing a similar USD1 billion amount in 2008 on the development of its broadband network, upping capacity to 200Gbps by mid-2008, and 300Gbps later on.
