NEC to upgrade Pan-American cable for eleven telcos

Japan’s NEC Corporation has signed a contract with a purchaser consortium of eleven telecoms carriers for upgrading the Pan-American Cable System, which connects the west coast of South America and the Caribbean through Panama. The eleven purchasers are: AT&T (US), Telmex (Mexico), CANTV (Venezuela), Cable & Wireless Panama, Embratel (Brazil), Ecuador’s Corporacion Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT), Entel Chile, Telefonica Colombia, SETAR (Aruba), Antelecom and Cable Andino. The Pan-American Cable System was first installed in 1999, and the upgrade will give a boost to regional capacities of multiple 10Gbps wavelengths. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009.
