France Telecom has announced that it will invest KES8 billion (USD99 million) in Kenyan subsidiary Orange Kenya in 2009. France Telecom acquired Orange Kenya, formerly Telkom Kenya, from the Kenyan government in November 2007 and invested KES10 billion developing the network’s infrastructure last year. Orange operates Kenya’s sole national fixed line network and also offers broadband services. Orange launched a range of mobile services in September 2008, becoming Kenya’s third mobile network operator. The company will use the investment to optimise its CDMA and GSM networks. The funds will also be used to rebuild Orange’s fixed network infrastructure. Orange reported a total of 489,000 fixed line subscribers and 360,000 mobile subscribers at the end of 2008.
