TOT told to cut planned 3G budget

20 Mar 2009

Thailand’s Information and Communications Technology Minister Ranongruk Suwanchawee has ordered state-run telco TOT to cut its budget for developing 3G mobile services from THB29 billion (USD818 million) to THB20 billion, reports The Nation. TOT, currently the country’s only holder of a 2100MHz UMTS licence via subsidiary Thai Mobile, will contribute THB2 billion, with the remainder to be funded via loans secured on a government-to-government basis. TOT is expected to finalise a plan to roll out 500 3G base stations in the next four months, as it wants to offer commercial terms for leasing 3G infrastructure to privately-owned 2G mobile operators ahead of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) planned auction of 3G licences in the third quarter of this year.
