Spice Nepal Company Limited (SNPL), which operates cellular services under the Mero Mobile banner, is planning to reduce its cell phone tariff rates, the Republica newspaper reports without citing its sources. The privately run cellco proposes to cut its per minute rates for pre-paid calls to NPR1.89-NPR2.83 (USD0.023 to USD0.034) per minute, down from the current NPR3.49-NPR3.99 it charges. National regulator the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) is reviewing the proposal which, if approved, would be implemented on 14 April.
TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database writes that with a customer base of 1.725 million at 31 December 2008, Mero Mobile is the second largest mobile operator in Nepal, behind Nepal Telecom with 2.512 million. However, there are claims many of Mero’s subscribers are not using the service frequently due to its expensive tariff structure.
