19 Mar 2009

French alternative telecoms operators Iliad (Free) and SFR (including neuf Cegetel) have launched a promotion whereby they are offering IPTV subscribers free access to a number of Canal+ TV channels for a limited period. Free is offering users access to the Canal+ premium channels – Canal+, Canal+ Cinema, Canal+ Sport, Canal+ Decale and Canal+ Family – gratis between 10 March and 23 March. neuf Cegetel meanwhile is offering its IPTV customers free access to all Canal+ channels between 23 March and 2 April. Both telcos are fighting for market share against France Telecom. The incumbent’s Orange TV service has in excess of 1.5 million users, compared with around 850,000 for neuf Cegetel. Free has not published details of its IPTV base but the national regulator ARCEP estimated there were 5.643 million IPTV subscribers in the country as at 30 September 2008, up 1.6 million or 39%, on the same time the previous year.
