Comcast in third place, but for how long?

13 Mar 2009

Comcast has issued a press release claiming it is now the US’s third placed telco by subscribers with 6.47 million customers. Comcast Digital Voice has now exceeded Qwest’s reported residential subscriber base which, as Total Telecom notes, makes it the first time that a cable TV firm has obtained a greater number of primary line voice customers than a former Bell company and descendant of the original AT&T. However, Comcast may not hold the third place position for long because the merger of CenturyTel and Embarq, due to complete in the second quarter of this year, will produce an operator with a combined subscriber base exceeding seven million.
