Africell expands network coverage

Lebanese-owned Lintel SL, which operates under the banner Africell, has launched a new cell site in the small town of Lakka, west of the capital Freetown. The company’s chief commercial officer, Joe Amara Bangali Jnr, said: ‘Lakka is a strategic town with enormous tourist potential. The inhabitants of Lakka can now benefit from our quality service, affordable tariffs, our extensive network and exciting value added services.’ The company has invested USD20 million over the past year in the improvement and expansion of its GSM network, and plans to install more new sites in rural areas during 2009. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Africell had 650,000 mobile subscribers at the end of 2008, up from 450,000 a year earlier.
