Far EasTone WiMAX delay

12 Mar 2009

Far EasTone (FET) has said the roll out of its WiMAX network, initially scheduled for the first quarter of this year, has been pushed back to year-end. Reuters reports President Jan Nilsson said yesterday, ‘We are going to push out WiMAX on a commercial basis by the fourth quarter of this year, but will begin construction of the networks sometime soon,’ while the company focuses on other projects in the immediate future.

FET won a 2.5GHz licence covering southern Taiwan in July 2007. At the same date both of its main rivals in the Taiwanese wireless market, Chunghwa Telecom and a unit of Taiwan Mobile, bid unsuccessfully for WiMAX licences.
