Total IPTV users to hit 5m by 2013

According to a study by consultancy firm Detecon International, the market for internet protocol TV (IPTV) in Germany is set to grow more strongly in the next five years than previously predicted, reaching over five million users by 2013. Managing consultant of the firm, Thomas Grota, said that despite the country’s comparably large free-to-air offer and high television licence fee, ‘it is foreseeable that the market volume for IPTV in Germany will follow the development in countries such as France or Italy.’ The study reports that IPTV operators will plough further investment into advertising their value-added services and will become more involved in programme production, and therefore have the ability to ‘directly address end-customers for the compilation of attractive offers.’ Three companies currently offer IPTV services in the country; incumbent Deutsche Telekom (DT), Arcor and HanseNet, with a combined total of 565,000 subscribers.
