Indotel reports USD1 billion FDI in telecoms between 2004-2008

The Instituto Dominicano de las Telecomunicaciones (Indotel), the telecoms regulator for the Dominican Republic, has announced that foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country’s telecom sector over the four years to 2008 amounted to approximately USD1 billion. In a statement Jose Rafael Vargas, Indotel’s president, also said that foreign investment since 1993 totalled more than USD2.24 billion. Mr Vargas also claimed that the Dominican telecoms sector contributed approximately 15% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2008 compared to just 4% four years earlier.
