U:fon service outage causes chaos

9 Mar 2009

Czech mobile network operator MobilKom, which operates under the U:fon banner, has experienced serious network disruptions affecting 90% of customers in Bohemia, including Pragus and Moravia. According to local press reports the company released a press relase soon after the failure occurred to reassure customers its network would be back online shortly. ‘The technical team responsible for the quality and functionality of the network is working all day to restart all the base stations in the Czech Republic,’ said U:fon director for technology Zdenek Bilek. The unexpected outage is an embarrassment to the firm which intends to compensate those affected said Managing Director Peter Hall. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, U:fon has been operating a nationwide CDMA mobile network since May 2007. Having initially offered a data-only service, in June 2008 the company added voice call packages and by January 2009 had 65,000 voice telephony customers and 35,000 data users. Its network currently covers 84% of the population, compared with the >99% coverage offered by rival GSM operators.
