Australian IT is reporting that mobile operator Vodafone has held back an announcement on the schedule for the completion of improvements to its 3G network. Vodafone, in partnership with hardware vendor Ericsson, announced in December 2007 that it would spend AUD500 million (USD319.4 million) on expanding its UMTS infrastructure to 95% of the population. However, in October 2008 it revealed it would not meet its initial December 2008 deadline. Last month the cellco said it would unveil a timetable for the project’s completion within four weeks, but it now says that it cannot do so until it resolves some final legal technicalities. Despite the delay in revealing the timetable, Vodafone has said that its network expansion plans are on track, and claims that the project will be finished in the first half of 2009.
