German cableco Unitymedia is expanding its coverage to an additional 24,000 households in the federal state of Hessen, following its takeover of smaller regional competitor KfGW in February for an undisclosed amount. Unitymedia has begun to upgrade its newly acquired network in the cities of Gross-Gerau, Weiterstadt and Buttelborn, and will be able to offer triple-play services with a data rate of up to 32Mbps from the end of April.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Unitymedia had a broadband subscriber base of 630,000 at the end of 2008, up from 311,000 a year earlier.
