LRTC launches mobile WiMAX services

4 Mar 2009

Broadcasting service provider Lithuanian Radio and TV Centre (LRTC) has commercially launched what it claims to be the country’s first mobile WiMAX service. LRTC was awarded a WiMAX licence by the Communications Regulatory Authority (RRT) in late 2007, while vendor Samsung was contracted for the deployment in the capital Vilnius in December 2008, supplying 530 3.5GHz base stations. LRTC is selling mobile WiMAX terminals in shopping and entertainment centres in the country’s major cities and plans to expand its service nationwide by 2010. In the future, LRTC plans to introduce additional services, including voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephony and video transmission.
