NTA launches bid to reduce interconnection charges

3 Mar 2009

National telecoms regulator the Nepal Telecom Authority (NTA) is endeavouring to make domestic operators reduce their interconnection charges, as per its recent directive. According to the Himalayan Times newspaper, the NTA issued fresh directives under Section 15 of the Telecommunication Act-2053 BS on 8 January. It is asking all service providers – Nepal Telecom (NT), United Telecom Ltd (UTL), Spice Nepal (Mero Mobile) and STM Telecom Communication – to reduce the interconnection charge from 12 February 2009, although to date its request has fallen on deaf ears. Under the directive, the interconnection charge for a mobile-to-mobile call (for example) should fall to NPR0.54 (USD0.006) per minute from the current NPR1-NPR2.25 charge.
