MetroPCS back in the black

MetroPCS reported fourth quarter 2008 net income of USD15 million, compared to a net loss of USD47 million in the same period last year. Revenue increased 22.5% to USD724 million, while service revenue increased 30.3% to USD666 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report USD765.16 million revenue. Average revenue per user (ARPU) in the quarter was USD40.52, down from USD42.83 in the year-ago quarter. Churn in the fourth quarter increased to 5.1%, up from 4.8% in the fourth quarter of 2007.

MetroPCS ended 2008 with almost 5.4 million total subscribers. In November, the carrier launched its nationwide calling plan, which provides service in 300 cities.
