VMAX Telecom has secured permission from the National Communications Commission (NCC) to start building cellular base stations for its WiMAX service. NCC spokesperson Lee Ta-sung said the commission would grant the company an official licence after it has certified its base stations. VMAX must begin operations within six months of acquiring its licence, he said. VMAX has signed contracts with Samsung Electronics and Alvarion for the purchases of about 300 WiMAX base stations from the two companies with an initial budget of USD29 million.
VMAX was one of three firms awarded 2.5GHz licences for northern Taiwan in July 2007. The NCC has required that all telecom companies acquire licences for operations by March 2010.
