Regulator delays mobile TV licensing

25 Feb 2009

The South African telecoms regulator ICASA has withdrawn an invitation calling for firms to apply for mobile TV licences, saying it is keen to finalise its digital migration policy before offering concessions. The move has brought criticism from some corners, however; Business Day quoted local analyst David Moore who said: ‘The continued delaying of licensing is holding back the industry, and damages confidence in the local telecoms sector.’ ICASA favours the deployment of a single national mobile TV system which will be shared by all cellular operators, while the cellcos themselves have called for spectrum to be awarded to individual players.
