FPT successfully trials mobile WiMAX

24 Feb 2009

FPT Telecom, a subsidiary of the Corporation for Financing and Promoting Technology (FPT), has announced it successfully tested mobile WiMAX in the capital Hanoi. The trials enabled high speed internet access, video downloads and the transfer of data and phone calls via wireless internet at speeds of up to 15Mbps, within three kilometres of a pilot WiMAX station. FPT Telecom director, Nguyen Dinh Hung, commented: ‘The results have opened many opportunities for us to develop and provide mobile telecoms services. Our goal is to integrate all services into a single broadband connection.’ He added that WiMAX has great growth potential in Vietnam where the current level of broadband connectivity is 1.4 million households per 18 million, and stated it would therefore be expensive, time consuming and complex to deliver conventional wirelines to every house. FPT Telecom was awarded a licence to test WiMAX by the Ministry of Information and Communications in February 2006.
