Government to limit triple-play packages to national operators

23 Feb 2009

The government of Uruguay plans to allow only state-owned telecoms operator Antel and other national pay-TV operators to offer triple-play packages, according to BNamericas. In addition, the government has cancelled the licence for Mexico-based Telmex to provide satellite TV services, which was issued last year by the country’s telecoms regulator, Unidad Reguladora de Servicios de Comunicaciones (URSEC). It is understood that the government fears Telmex will use its satellite TV licence to deploy services such as IPTV using terrestrial infrastructure, and would then go on to use this infrastructure to offer fixed line telephony. It is expected that Telmex will seek legal action against the revocation of its licence.
