Viettel launches Metfone mobile service

20 Feb 2009

Vietnamese military-owned telco Viettel has launched wireless services in Cambodia under the name of Metfone, according to VNBusinessNews. Metfone attracted 100,000 subscribers after two months of pilot operations and has already installed over 1,000 base stations and a 5,000km fibre-optic cable network linking all 24 provinces, creating 700 jobs for local workers. The company plans to install an additional 3,000 stations and a 10,000km fibre-optic cable during 2009 in order to extend its coverage to the country’s remote villages and islands. The Cambodian unit was established in June 2007, and in early February 2009 Viettel announced plans to expand its network even further, aiming to introduce services to North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela.
