3 Austria hails mobile TV success

17 Feb 2009

Mobile operator 3 Austria has announced that it has signed up 90,000 regular users of its mobile TV service since its launch in June last year, though it says take-up would be improved if more operators adopted the technology and if this prompted vendors to introduce a wider range of DVB-H devices. The cellco’s hybrid mobile TV service uses both its own cellular network and the national DVB-H transmitter network which is shared between Austrian cellcos. A report from Broadband TV News quotes 3 Austria CEO Berthold Thoma as saying: ‘Austria is definitely a pioneer in mobile TV in Europe.’ He adds: ‘If only countries such as France, Germany and Great Britain would adopt DVB-H technology, there would be more devices that support DVB-H.’
