CMC Telecom Infrastructure, a subsidiary of Vietnam-based CMC Group, announced the government has given it permission to become the country’s second privately owned company to provide fixed line and internet services. CMC Telecom will join five state-owned wireline service providers in the market, as well as Vietnam’s first private telco, Corporation for Financing and Promoting Technology (FPT), which was awarded a licence for fixed line telephony in October 2007. The government’s permission will pave the way for the regulator, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), to grant a licence to CMC Telecom Infrastructure. The telco was formed in September 2008 by the State Capital Investment Corporation (SCIC), which holds 51% in the company, and CMC Telecom. According to a CMC Telecom official, the company hopes to launch WiMAX and mobile services in the near future.
