Canal Plus files complaint over Orange France’s TV service

French pay-TV broadcaster Canal Plus, along with another Vivendi-controlled unit, French mobile operator SFR, have filed a complaint to the French competition authorities accusing France Telecom (Orange) of flaunting the rules concerning its broadband pay-TV service. Canal Plus CEO Bertrand Meheut reportedly told the French daily La Tribune that Orange is unfairly offering a ‘tied sales’ contract offering sport and cinema channels on its broadband TV service, and also selling access to premier French football matches ‘at a loss’. Meheut has apparently stressed that while the joint complaint does not aim to bar Orange from selling the channels in question, ‘Everybody has something to gain from a clarification of the rules of the game … It is the future of the fragile audiovisual market that is at stake.’
