Russian wireless ISP Scartel is installing Cisco mobile WiMAX technology for its Yota brand service. Cisco is providing Scartel with optical transport based on DWDM, a high-speed IP/MPLS data network and data centre technology designed to support high-quality video distribution.
Scartel’s 2.5GHz – 2.7GHz mobile WiMAX network provides full coverage within Moscow’s Garden Ring and in Vasileostrovsky and Petrogradsky districts of St. Petersburg, and partial coverage in several other districts of the two cities. The company is planning to extend its reach to all districts of the two cities and to certain areas along the major roads leading into them. The network deployment is funded by Telconet Capital Limited Partnership, which has invested USD300 million in the project. The equipment for the WiMAX network was supplied by Samsung Electronics.
