Italian wireless broadband service provider Linkem has contracted DragonWave to supply its Horizon Compact radios for backhaul in its WiMAX network. ‘DragonWave solutions are a very important part of our IP backhaul strategy. They will enable rapid and cost effective deployment of our network,’ said Davide Rota, CEO of Linkem. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Linkem provides both nationwide Wi-Fi Hotspot services and wireless DSL services to around 300 towns, accounting for about 500,000 inhabitants, mainly in the north of Italy. In March 2008 Linkem gained the rights of use for WiMAX frequencies for 13 regions, accounting for approximately 80% of the Italian population. Linkem launched its first commercial WiMAX offer in Italy on 1 October 2008.
