GSO records 3.2 million new phone subscribers in January

Vietnam’s General Statistics Office (GSO) has reported that the country’s telephone service providers added 3.2 million new subscribers during January 2009, up 60% from the same period a year earlier. At the end of 2008 there were 79.4 million registered phone users, increasing to 82.6 million a month later. Consequently, 97.5% of the population now has access to phone services, either through a mobile service provider or a fixed line. The GSO also reported that at end-January 2009 85.5% of total phone subscribers were mobile phone users. The country’s telecom sector recorded revenue of nearly VND93 trillion (USD5.6 billion) during 2008, up 39.1% from last year, according to the Ministry of Information and Communications.
