BIF knocked out

5 Feb 2009

Communications and information technology minister Steven Joyce has announced he is abandoning the previous Labour-led government’s NZD340 million (USD173.4 million) five-year Broadband Investment Fund (BIF). BIF was given the remit to experiment with different wired and wireless broadband technologies, with a focus on rural areas, and currently had 19 full applications awaiting approval, and 156 expressions of interest.

Mr Joyce will direct attention instead on the government’s six-year, NZD1.5 billion plan to bring ‘ultrafast broadband’ to 75% of New Zealanders. The communications ministry will announce its plans for broadband rollout shortly.
