Nepal Doorsanchar Nigam Limited (Nepal Telecom, or NT) has selected Gilat Satellite Networks to provide it with a SkyEdge broadband VSAT communications network covering hundreds of sites in the country. The contract is being organised by telecoms consultancy and engineering firm Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL), which is working on behalf of NT. The telco will use the new VSAT network to provide broadband internet access in remote parts of the country, as well as providing toll-free voice telephony services as per its Universal Service Obligation (USO). In addition, NT has selected Gilat’s SkyAbis cellular backhaul solution to extend the range of its GSM and CDMA services, it said.
